Monique Hannon, right, was comforted by friend Monique Reynoso after a fire heavily damaged Hannon's home Tuesday afternoon. No one was home when a fire erupted. Firefighters wee able to extinguish the fire, but the home may be a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

A US Customs and Border Protection officer checked indentifications of persons entering the US at the Bridge of the Americas port of entry Thursday.  Officials reported no major problems on the first day of new identificaton requirements for US citzens entering the country.  Oral citizenship declarations have been replaced with a valid US passport or a driver license with birth certificate.

U.S. Border Patrol agents Margarita Tarango, left, Humberto Gonzalez and Ramon Garza saluted as a funeral procession for fallen U.S. Border Patrol Senior Agent Luis Aguilar, Jr. passed their position on the Rio Grande levee where they were patrolling Monday. Aguilar was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by a suspected smuggler as Aguilar was placing spike strips in the path of a Hummer and Ford pickup Jan. 19 about 20 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.

A Union Pacific work crew replaced worn rail ties on the East bound tracks at the Chelsea Street crossing Monday.  Once inspectors identify and mark bad ties with bright orange paint, the crew uses special machinery to remove spikes, pull out the ties and replace them with new ones.  The worn ties are then picked up by another machine alongside the tracks. The crew replaces about one mile of ties each day, said a worker on the scene.

Margie Hauptman, right, shows a model of the Auschwitz-Birkenau prison camp to her grandaughters Madison Hauptman, 11, and Lauren Hauptman, 10, left- Margie's in-laws were housed at the now infamous camp and her husband was taken to an orphanage.  When the family was liberated, they moved to the United States in 1952.
