John Lucas, banana salesman and philosopher

07/26/1960 El Paso's unofficial philosopher, john Lucas the banana man, doesn't think the upcoming Presidential election is going to be any great shakes. Lucas, whose horse-drawn banana wagon is a familiar sight on downtown streets, doesn't see much difference in the two parties, except in their symbols, the burro and the elefant, Lucas spells phonetically.

Nellie, his longtime business partner died recently and John started looking for a new horse to take over the work. He successor, Little Lady, here keeps one ear cocked for John's bidding. She's not as sharp as Nellie, John admits, but she'll learn.

Lucas, undismayed by Nellie's fear of water, continued to sell bananas until the street cleared.
