Caption: September 14, 1971 - CONVERSION PLANT OPENS -- The $1.7 million pilot plant to test a new process that converts sulphur dioxide in smelter gases into elemental sulphur goes onstream Tuesday at the American Smelting and Refining Co. smelter. It uses a process developed at ASARCO's New Jersey laboratories and both ASARCO and Phelps Dodge Corp. are sharing the cost of the joint venture. In addition, the two companies have budgeted $800,000 for starting up the plant and for a year's operation. It is designed to produce up to 20 tons of sulphur daily.
